Offensive Struggles Doom Pride Against Averett

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College softball team dropped a double-header Sunday to the Cougars of Averett University in USA South Athletic Conference action.

The Pride (11-9, 0-4 USA South) dropped Game 1, 1-0, before suffering an 11-3 loss in Game 2.

The two teams were scoreless in Game 1 before the Cougars (12-9, 4-0 USA South) struck for the game’s lone run in the fourth inning.

Greensboro loaded the bases in the seventh inning but could not push the tying run across.

Kali Puckett recorded a team-high two hits, while Brittany Rush and Sarah Tompkins had one hit each. Dawn Harris (4-5) took the loss and recorded two strikeouts.

The Cougars then jumped on top in the second inning of Game 2 with four runs before the Pride pulled to within 4-2 in the bottom half. Allyson Yeager doubled before scoring on a double by Mandi Ballard. Later in the inning, Ballard came scored on a bases-loaded walk by Puckett.

However, Averett scored six more times in the third inning to extend its advantage to 10-2.

The Pride again got one run back, but the Cougars held on for the eight-run victory.

Yeager finished with a team-high two hits, while Puckett and Ballard had one hit. Pitcher Maddy Wetherholt (7-4) took the loss.

“We have to do a better job of capitalizing on our opportunities,” Interim Head Coach Denzel Wallace said. “We have to do a better job at the plate with runners on base as there were several instances where we had runners in scoring position and could not get them in. After a long past eight days, we will take tomorrow to rest, then return to the field Tuesday and get ready for our next opponent.”

The Pride will return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday when they travel to North Carolina Wesleyan for another USA South Athletic Conference double-header. For more information on Greensboro College softball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
