Elon Duo Picks Up CAA Baseball Honors

RICHMOND, Va. – A pair of Elon University baseball players picked up weekly awards from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) on Monday, March 14. Senior first baseman Tyler McVicar was honored as the league’s player of the week, while freshman pitcher Ryan Conroy shared rookie of the week honors.

McVicar led Elon to a 3-1 week by hitting .529 (9-for-17) with a double, home run, three runs scored and eight RBI. The Melrose, Mass., native recorded at least two hits in all four games and has now reached base safely in 12 consecutive outings. In the Phoenix’s win over Liberty, McVicar went 3-for-5 with a career-high five RBI. He also drove in the go-ahead run in Sunday’s victory over The Citadel. On the season, McVicar is hitting .357 with eight runs scored and 16 RBI. Thanks to six doubles and two home runs, his slugging percentage sits at .571.

Conroy, a native of Rotonda West, Fla., became the second Phoenix rookie to pick up CAA weekly honors this season. Conroy went 2-0 with a save out of the bullpen in Elon’s four games. He allowed just one hit and no runs in the final 3.1 innings to earn his first career save against Liberty. He then tossed 1.2 shutout frames to pick up his first win against The Citadel on Saturday and gave up just one run over 3.0 innings to get another victory on Sunday. He struck out six on the week. For the year, Conroy has made eight appearances and boasts a 2.16 ERA. In 16.2 innings, he has struck out 17 hitters.

Elon will be back in action on Wednesday, March 16, at 6 p.m. at North Carolina.
