ELON, N.C. – Salvador Mijares has a match-clinching victory for the second straight match and the Elon University men’s tennis team earned a 4-2 victory over Navy on Monday, March 14, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
With the Phoenix leading 3-1 in the match, Mijares battle back after falling 4-6 in the first set to win two straight sets by 6-2 scores to secure Elon’s ninth win overall and seventh in its last eight matches.
The Phoenix improves its season mark to 9-4 overall and Navy falls to 11-7 with the loss. Elon has yet to lose to an unranked opponent this season and begins its three-match week with a win. Singles competition was played first and doubles was not played out since the maroon and gold had already clinched the victory.
HIGHLIGHTS
Senior Robert Lindgren got things started for the Phoenix as he cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Krishna Jones to give Elon a 1-0 lead. It was Lindgren’s eighth singles win of the season, which is tied for a team-high.
Navy answered with a Austin Jones victory at No. 1 singles as he defeated Mario Paccini 6-2, 6-4 to tie up the match at 1-1. Chris Humphreys tallied a 6-4, 6-4 result at No. 6 singles to put Elon back on top 2-1.
Felipe Sarrasague then extended Elon’s lead, 3-1 at the No. 2 position. After a tight 7-5 battle in the first set with Thomas Pecor, Sarrasague followed through with a 6-2 second set victory, earning Elon’s third point.
Mijares and Charlie Sullivan both saw their matches go to a third set. The Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela native battle back from a first set loss at No. 4 singles to win two consecutive sets at 6-2 to clinch the victory for the Phoenix.
With the match already decided, Walker Sims defeated Sullivan 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 5 singles to tack on one final point for Navy as Elon claimed the 4-2 victory.

The Phoenix hosts the Davidson Wildcats tomorrow at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. First serve is set for 3 p.m. Elon will then hit the road for its third match of the week to face James Madison on Friday at 2 p.m.
