ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men’s tennis team won its third straight match, defeating the Davidson Wildcats 6-1 on Tuesday, March 15, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
After Elon (10-4) clinched the doubles point and earned three singles victories, Felipe Sarrasague clinched a Phoenix win, upending Davidson’s (5-7) Artem Khrapko 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Robert Lindgren defeated J.B. Gough 6-1, 6-2 for his fourth consecutive singles victory, improving his season record to 9-3 overall.
Through 14 matches, the Phoenix has already matched its win total of 10 from last season after Elon concluded the 2015 season with a 10-13 record.
HIGHLIGHTS
The Phoenix clinched the doubles point on court three to take a 1-0 lead in the match. After No. 2 doubles duo of Lindgren and Mario Paccini claimed a 6-1 win, Neal Port and Salvador Mijares defeated Wildcats duo Khrapko and Zack Zapatero 6-2 to snatch the doubles point for Elon.
Lindgren got things going in singles play with his ninth win of the season at No. 3 singles to extend Elon’s lead in the match, 2-0. Petar Tomic ended his battle with Jack Riazzi on top with a 6-4, 6-4 decision to extend the lead 3-0, with Paccini and Sarrasague both in position to clinch the match.
It would be Sarrasague that took the fourth and clinching point for the Phoenix with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Khrapko to give Elon a 4-0 advantage. Paccini then followed it up with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 1 singles to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Phoenix.
Chris Humphreys’ singles matches at No. 5 went to a third set tiebreak and the junior came out on top 10-8 in the tiebreak. David Hager claimed Davidson’s lone point in the match with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles against Charlie Sullivan.
UP NEXT
The Phoenix closes out the week with a road trip to face its first CAA opponent of the season. Elon will take on James Madison on Friday for a 2 p.m. match.
