ATLANTA – Guilford College’s Stephanie Flamini was named the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) Region 5 Coach of the Year and Quakers’ junior Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) earned honorable mention NCAA Division III All-America recognition Friday night. Nominations and selections for both honors were made WBCA members.
As regional coach of the year, Flamini was one of 12 finalists for the United States Marine Corps/WBCA Coach of the Year Award, which was won by Scott Hemer of the State University of New York at Geneseo.
Flamini earned her first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year Award in February. In addition to reaching two milestones in her 13th Guilford season, Flamini guided the Quakers to a 22-6 overall record and the second round of the Division III playoffs. Guilford placed second in ODAC Tournament and regular-season standings with a 13-3 league mark after it was picked sixth in the loop’s preseason coaches’ poll. Flamini posted her 188th Guilford victory November 24 to become the school’s career women’s basketball coaching wins leader. Flamini collected her 200th career Guilford win in a 60-58 thriller over Washington and Lee University January 30.
Guilford’s first WBCA regional coach of the year, Flamini has a 264-185 coaching record in 17 seasons, 206-144 at Guilford. Her Quakers have made three NCAA tournament appearances, played in four ODAC Tournament finals and won 20 games four times in the past five years. Guilford won league titles in 2012 and 2013. Flamini has coached 13 Quakers to 21 combined All-ODAC commendations, including three-time first-team pick Gabby Oglesby ’14. The 1994 West Chester University graduate also serves as Guilford’s senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director.
Weatherly, a 5-11 forward, is the fourth Guilford student-athlete named WBCA honorable mention All-American and its first since Arden Miller ’01 in 2000. She was named a Second Team All-South pick by D3hoops.com earlier this week and a First Team All-ODAC selection last month. The junior led Guilford in most statistical categories, including scoring (15.0 ppg.), rebounding (9.5 rpg.) and assists (2.4 apg.). She ranked eighth among ODAC scoring leaders and third in rebounding, which makes her one of four students in the top-10 of both categories. Weatherly also averaged a league-best 3.1 steals per contest, the 38th-highest average in Division III thru games of March 12. She led the league in offensive rebounds (3.4 rpg.) and her 45.0% field-goal percentage ranked seventh.
Weatherly’s 87 steals stand second in school history and her 266 rebounds are ninth. She enters her senior campaign with 975 points, 25 shy of becoming the 19th 1,000-point scorer in school history. Her 599 career rebounds stand 12th all-time at Guilford.
Weatherly completed the season with 12 double-doubles, including a season-high 24-point, 15-rebound performance against Emory & Henry College February 17. She was a two-time ODAC Player of the Week and earned All-ODAC Tournament honors. Weatherly averaged 13.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 3.9 steals and 0.6 blocks in Guilford’s eight games versus NCAA Tournament and regionally ranked teams.
With no seniors on this year’s roster, Flamini could return all 14 letter winners in 2016-17, including Weatherly.
