College Track & Field Results – Sprinters and Middle Distance Claim High Marks at Dr. Jack Toms Open

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Guilford College’s Josephus Mitchell (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) won two events as the Quakers competed in the Dr. Jack Toms Open, hosted by Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Lynchburg College.

Mitchell claimed victory in the 100 and 200 meter dash events as part of Guilford’s seven top-three finishes across both teams. Mitchell won the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.20 seconds and the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.40 seconds. Mitchell also ran the anchor leg of the 4×100 meter relay, joined by Alex Martin (Pfafftown, N.C./Reagan), Nate Phillips, and Gus Chambers as the Quakers were victorious over Lynchburg with a time of 44.37 seconds, tied for fourth all-time in program history.

Martin also claimed second in the long jump, jumping 6.44 meters for his best mark on his third jump by .28 meters.

Lucas Prillaman claimed second place in the 400 meter run with a time of 52.58 seconds, 1.08 seconds off the top time.

Trent Evans (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) claimed third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:02.04, the top collegiate time in the event and 2.5 seconds off the top unattached time.

The women’s 4×400 meter relay team led the women’s side by claiming victory in the event. A’Lexus Newkirk, Tess Stryk, Jamie McCreary, and Rebecca Reyna (Liberty, N.C./Southern Alamance) finished with the sixth-fastest time in school history with a time of 4:35.58.

Stryk also claimed a six-place finish in the 800 meter run, claiming sixth with a time of 2:33.40, the sixth-fastest time in school history.

Becca Benfield led Guilford’s field participants with an eighth-place finish in the shot-put, throwing for a mark of 9.45 meters, the fourth-best in program history.

Coach Danny Cash’s Quakers return to action Friday, April 1st, participating in the two-day VertKlasse Meeting hosted by High Point University.
