Elon Men’s Tennis Travels to Coastal Carolina Seeking Fifth Straight Win

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men’s tennis team looks to build on its four-match winning streak on Tuesday, March 22, at 1:30 p.m. against a red-hot Coastal Carolina squad at the Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex.

LAST TIME OUT

Last week, Elon finished 3-0 overall with victories over Navy, Davidson and James Madison. In the last match, the Phoenix completed a 7-0 sweep of the Dukes on Friday, March 18, in Harrisonburg, Va.

SCOUTING COASTAL CAROLINA

The Chanticleers have had a stellar season thus far with a 13-2 overall record. Coastal Carolina’s only losses this season came at the hands of William & Mary and No. 54 Duke. The team is currently riding a seven-match winning streak into Tuesday’s contest. Most recently, the Chanticleers earned a 5-2 victory over Presbyterian College on Sunday, March 20.

SERIES HISTORY

Tuesday will be the fifth meeting between the Phoenix and the Chanticleers and the second time in Conway, S.C. This will be the first time the two teams have met since the 2006 season. Elon leads the all-time series 4-0. The last time the two teams met, the Phoenix earned a 6-1 victory on March 18, 2006 at Coastal Carolina.

HOME COOKING

The Phoenix has impressed on its home court to begin the season. Elon holds a 6-1 record at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and a 7-1 home record overall. Since the beginning of the 2013 spring season, the Phoenix has achieved a home record of 29-8.

YOUTH MOVEMENT

True freshmen have been carrying a heavy load for the Phoenix so far this season. Taylor Foote, Salvador Mijares, Felipe Osses-Konig, Mario Paccini, Felipe Sarrasague and Charlie Sullivan have combined for 33 of the team’s 56 singles wins through 15 matches. Mijares has a freshman-high nine singles wins, while Paccini and Sarrasague are close behind with six victories.

The Phoenix will host rival UNCG at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center for a match “Under the Lights” at 6 p.m.

HEAD COACH MICHAEL LEONARD

Michael Leonard is in his 12th season as Elon’s director of tennis and head men’s tennis coach. Leonard is a five-time winner of the Southern Conference Coach of the Year award and has led the program to five conference championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances.

2016 CAA TOURNAMENT

Elon was selected to host the 2016 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships, which will be held April 21-24 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and the Burlington Tennis Center. It will mark the first-ever CAA Tournament hosted by the Phoenix and first conference tournament hosted by the program since the 2013 SoCon Tournament.
