Elon Softball Phoenix Suffers Setback at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell starter Katie Baker scattered five hits in a complete game performance as she held the bats of the Elon University softball team in check with the Phoenix falling to the Camels, 3-0, on Tuesday, March 22, at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

Alaina Hall had two of the Phoenix’s five hits on the day, but Elon (14-13) suffered only its third shutout of the season to the Camels (12-15). The five base hits tied for the Phoenix’s second-lowest total on the year.

Starter Kayla Caruso (3-4) suffered the loss in the circle while going only a third of an inning. Sophomore Kiandra Mitchum threw 5.2 innings in relief and allowed three hits, two runs, one earned, while having a season-high five strikeouts.

The Rundown: Campbell scored in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. Amber Schisler led off the frame with a double down the right field line and crossed home plate on a base hit from Baker.

The Phoenix loaded the bases in the top of the third. Callie Horn, Hall and Hannah Olson all reached on three consecutive one-out singles before the next batter lined a shot to the third baseman. The fielder appeared to bobble the ball on the way to the ground leading to a some confusion on the bases as the Camels converted on a double play to close out the inning.

Elon had only one more base runner move into scoring position the remainder of the game. The Camels added two runs in the bottom of the sixth to pad its lead and secure the 3-0 victory.

Baker finished the game with seven strikeouts in the shutout win.
