Smith leads HPU women’s golf on day two in Orlando

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – High Point University women’s golf junior Cayla Smith improved on her first round score by 10 strokes Saturday to lead the Panthers on day two at the Bearcats Spring Classic at El Campeon Golf Course.

Smith shot a 77 in round two action to improve her standing by 45 spots on the leaderboard Saturday. Smith posted a pair of birdies and nine pars on the difficult course. She is currently 46th with a 36-hole total of 164 (87-77).

“Cayla was a highlight for us today,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “She played very well in all areas of her game up until some unforced errors at the end of the round. The rest of the team needs to be positive tomorrow and not get flustered when situations aren’t textbook. If we can adapt, we can improve.”

Junior Danielle Fuss shot 84 Saturday and is 59th thru two rounds with a score of 166 (82-84). Freshman Landrie Grace is 72nd after a 36-hole total of 168 (82-86) while senior Tan Cheeranont is right behind in 75th (84-85, 169). Freshman Sandrine Yesilian has posted a two round total of 185.

HPU is 15th in the tournament with a two-day total of 667 (335-332). Host Cincinnati leads the event (626), followed by MAC power Akron (629) and Jacksonville (631).
