Elon Men’s Tennis Hosts Rival UNCG for Tuesday Night Match

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men’s tennis team is set to host Triad rival UNCG on Tuesday night, March 29, at 6 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

FREE PIZZA FOR FIRST 50 STUDENTS
There will be free pizza provided at tomorrow night’s match for the first 50 students.

TUESDAY NIGHT TEST
This will be the first time during head coach Michael Leonard’s 12 years with the Phoenix men’s tennis program that Elon has hosted a night match at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

LAST TIME OUT
Last week, handed the Chanticleers their first loss at home since April 2014 with a 5-2 victory over Coastal Carolina on Tuesday, March 21. Felipe Sarrasague clinched a Phoenix victory for the third consecutive match, coming back from a first set defeat to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 against Vuk Velickovic at the No. 2 position.

SCOUTING UNCG
The Spartans enter the match with a 7-7 overall record and is currently on a two-match losing streak. UNCG fell to No. 57 East Tennessee State 7-0 in SoCon action on Saturday, March 26, in Johnson City, Tenn.

SERIES HISTORY
Tuesday will be the 17th meeting between the Phoenix and the Spartans in Elon’s Division I era. UNCG leads the all-time series 9-7. The last time the two teams met, the Spartans earned a 4-3 victory on April 8, 2015 at in Greensboro, N.C. Elon’s last win against UNCG was a 6-1 victory on April 2, 2014 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

HOME COOKING
The Phoenix has impressed on its home court to begin the season. Elon holds a 6-1 record at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and a 7-1 home record overall. Since the beginning of the 2013 spring season, the Phoenix has achieved a home record of 29-8.

YOUTH MOVEMENT
True freshmen have been carrying a heavy load for the Phoenix so far this season. Taylor Foote, Salvador Mijares, Felipe Osses-Konig, Mario Paccini, Felipe Sarrasague and Charlie Sullivan have combined for 35 of the team’s 60 singles wins through 16 matches. Mijares has a freshman-high nine singles wins, while Paccini and Sarrasague are close behind with six victories.

The Phoenix continues a five-match homestand on Friday, April 1, hosting College of Charleston at 3 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

HEAD COACH MICHAEL LEONARD
Michael Leonard is in his 12th season as Elon’s director of tennis and head men’s tennis coach. Leonard is a five-time winner of the Southern Conference Coach of the Year award and has led the program to five conference championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances.

2016 CAA TOURNAMENT
Elon was selected to host the 2016 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships, which will be held April 21-24 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and the Burlington Tennis Center. It will mark the first-ever CAA Tournament hosted by the Phoenix and first conference tournament hosted by the program since the 2013 SoCon Tournament.
