College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 12, Methodist 7

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Joe Eggleston scored a career- and game-high three goals in Guilford College’s 12-7 lacrosse win at Methodist University Tuesday. Senior Adam Fiore added a goal and three assists in the Quakers’ (4-5) third win in four games.

Eggleston, a freshman attacker, notched his first goal six minutes before halftime, which sent Guilford into halftime with a 5-1 lead. Classmate Zachary Berkowitz scored a goal in both of the opening quarters for the Quakers.

Methodist (6-6) scored three of the second half’s first four goals and drew to within 6-4 on a Jake Smerka tally with 4:52 left in the third quarter. Guilford defenseman Cam Davis scored off a rare assist by goalie Parker Styles at the four-minute mark, but the Monarchs’ Chris Lombardi answered, which made it a 7-5 game entering the final quarter.

Guilford struck twice early in the final frame to restore a four-goal edge. Ian Wiesenberg netted a man-down goal off a Fiore assist with 12:16 left in regulation. Less than a minute later, Andrew McDonagh tallied for a 9-5 Quakers’ edge. Fiore’s goal with 7:36 gave the Quakers an insurmountable 10-5 advantage.

In addition to recording his first college point, Styles, a sophomore, made a career-high 18 saves and picked up three ground balls. Berkowitz and Wiesenberg both finished with two goals and Alex Brownlee contributed two assists. Connor Manning won seven face-offs and shared team-high ground balls (4) honors with Erik Fries.

Jay Robinson’s three goals paced Methodist’s offense. Smerka notched two goals and one assist. Jordan DeSalvo won 15-of-22 draws and scooped up a game-high eight ground balls. Jackson Bingham stopped eight shots in 57 minutes between the pipes.

Coach Tom Carmean’s Quakers resume Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at home this Saturday (4/2) against Washington and Lee University at 4:00 p.m.
