College Softball Finals – Emory & Henry 2–7, Guilford 0–6

EMORY, Va. – Emory & Henry College’s Hannah Bays drove in three runs over the Wednesday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader as Guilford College fell twice to Emory & Henry. The Wasps claimed game one, 2-0, and the nightcap, 7-6, in eight innings.

The Quakers (17-7, 2-4 ODAC) held off an Emory & Henry (10-14, 3-1 ODAC) rally in the bottom of the first inning of game one. After the Wasps produced the rally with one out, game one starting pitcher Courtney Lackey recovered to produce a strike out and a fly out in the next two at-bats to keep runs off the board. Back-to-back singles helped the Quakers load the bases in the top of the fourth inning as Guilford crowded the base-paths with two outs before the Wasps induced a foul fly to end the half-inning. Bays converted the game’s lone runs for the Wasps with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning as she hit a one-out single with runners in scoring position.

Emory & Henry jumped to a 4-0 lead in the start of game two in a first-inning rally capped by a Bailey Williams sacrifice fly that produced the second out of the inning. The Quakers answered in the top of the third frame with a three-run rally, capped by a Caroline Barnette single down the left field line with two outs that drove in two runs. Emory & Henry posted one run a piece in the bottom of the third and fourth innings and the Quakers responded in the top of the fifth inning with a two-out, three-run rally as Taylor Boyd produced a two-run single and Sabrina Moreno followed with a one-run double to tie the game. Emory & Henry claimed the win with a one-out ground out in the infield after moving the runner to third base to earn the doubleheader sweep.

Barnette and Boyd each finished with two RBI a piece in game two. Brooks Bray and Laura Hall each led the Quakers in game one with Hall adding a stolen base.

Bays finished two-for-five on her three-RBI afternoon for Emory & Henry. Riley Pudney was the lone Wasp bat with multiple hits in game one, batting two-for-three while Ragan Halsey drove in two runs in game two, batting two-for-three.

Lackey (6-2) claimed the game one loss for the Quakers, striking out five batters and walking two in a complete-game effort. Makayla Carver (5-3) took the game two loss in a three and two-third innings relief effort, giving up only one unearned run and one hit.

Taylor Banner (5-7) claimed both wins in the doubleheader for Emory & Henry, throwing a complete-game in game one, striking out two and walking four while giving up just four hits. She claimed the game two with three and one-third innings, giving up just one walk.

The Quakers return home Saturday, hosing Shenandoah University for a noon ODAC doubleheader.
