Elon Baseball to Host College of Charleston in CAA Series (Friday Time Changed)

ELON, N.C. – The middle three games of a five-game homestand for the Elon University baseball team will be played this weekend with the Phoenix hosting the College of Charleston Cougars. The first game of the series has changed to a 5 p.m. start time on Friday, April 1. Game two is set for Saturday at 4 p.m., while the finale will be contested on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

The Series
Elon and Charleston have faced off 43 times with the Cougars holding a 25-18 edge in the series. Last year, Charleston won two of the three regular-season games and then defeated Elon in the CAA Tournament. The sides first met on March 21, 1998 with Elon picking up a 14-4 victory.

About Charleston
College of Charleston enters the series sitting at 18-7 overall and 3-0 in CAA play. The Cougars have won six straight, including a league sweep of Delaware and decisions over #21 Coastal Carolina and #2 South Carolina. At the plate, Charleston is hitting .250 with 37 doubles and 15 home runs in 25 games. The offense is led by Jake Maziar who is hitting .313 with 14 runs scored, four doubles and 18 RBI. Bradley Jones leads the team with six homers and nine doubles. The pitching staff sports a 3.52 ERA with 203 strikeouts in 225.0 innings. The staff has held opponents to a .248 batting average and has 12 saves, including six from Carter Love.

Pair Near National Stats Lead
Nick Zammarelli and Kyle Jackson are both off to solid starts to the 2016 season and are both near the top of a couple of NCAA statistical rankings (thru games of March 29). Zammarelli currently has 13 doubles to rank third in the nation, just one behind the leaders. Jackson’s nine home runs rate seventh, while his 12 doubles rank eighth. He also rates eighth in total bases and 10th in slugging percentage.
