Charleston Evens Series With Elon Baseball

ELON, N.C. – Five runs over the seventh and eighth innings propelled the College of Charleston baseball team to a 6-2 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Elon Phoenix as the Cougars evened the series at a game apiece on Saturday afternoon at Latham Park.

Tyler McVicar went 1-for-2, reached base four times and drove in a run for Elon (10-16, 2-5 CAA).

Jake Maziar paced Charleston (19-8, 4-1) by going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Morgan Phillips added two hits and scored twice for the Cougars.

Sean Byrnes (1-2) was charged with two runs on two hits in one-third of an inning to take the loss for the Phoenix.

Carter Love (2-1) picked up the win after holding Elon hitless and scoreless for 2.1 innings.

How It Happened: Elon led 2-1 going into the seventh inning before the Cougars scored three runs to move ahead 4-2. The inning began with a Phillips double down the left field line before Bradley Jones singled up the middle to tie the game. Following a walk and sacrifice bunt, Maziar singled home the go-ahead run. The final run came in on a Luke Manzo single.

Charleston tacked on a pair in the eighth on Maziar’s two-RBI single.

The Phoenix struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the first when McVicar singled home Kyle Jackson. After the Cougars tied it in the fourth, Elon went back on top, 2-1, in the sixth when Austin Leeney scored on a wild pitch.

Notes: Kory Shumate has reached safely in 13 consecutive contests… The teams combined for 21 walks and 30 runners left on base… Elon’s last 10 runs have all been scored with two outs.

On Deck: Elon and Charleston will play the rubber match of the series at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 3.
