College Softball Finals – Guilford 6–3, Shenandoah 5–1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Katy Holt drove in the game-winning run in game one while Courtney Lackey gave up just two hits in game two as the Quakers claimed a Saturday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader sweep over Shenandoah University. The Quakers took game one, 6-5, and nightcap, 3-1.

Game-one starting pitcher Makayla Carver shook off a bases-loaded situation with one out to start the first inning, inducing a fielder’s choice put-out at home plate and a strikeout of the final batter to strand the Hornets. Shenandoah starter Lindsay Corbin countered when she shook off back-to-back walks in the bottom of the second inning with runners at the corners to retire the Quakers.

Kimberly Brady put the Hornets on the board with a solo home run to lead off the top of the third frame to take an early lead. Guilford answered in a big way in the bottom of the third inning with a three-run rally capped by a Sabrina Moreno home run to left field to claim a 3-1 lead, her seventh home run of the season. Guilford added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth frame as two hits produced a run with two outs. Shenandoah erased the lead in the top of the sixth inning with a pair of home runs, one with two outs, to tie the game. The Hornets added to their lead one inning later on a Haley Koeninger single before the Quakers rallied to claim two outs to close the inning. With a runner on first and two outs, the Quakers produced a two-run rally as Anna Wolfe produced a pinch-hit single to tie the game, followed by Holt’s walk-off single up the right side to close out the game.

The Quakers jumped on the Hornets to start game two with three hits in the bottom of the first inning, producing one run with two fielder’s choice situations. Shenandoah held off Guilford’s rallies in the second and third innings, but could not produce any hits at the plate as game-two starting pitch Courtney Lackey faced the minimum amount of batters through five innings. Guilford extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth frame with a two-run rally, capped by Caroline Barnette’s ground out that produced the second run of the rally and produced the first out. Brady put the Hornets on the board in the top of the sixth inning with a two-out, scoring Megan Wilk from second base. Lackey closed the contest with a short seventh-inning effort, throwing three pitches for three outs to seal the sweep.

Moreno lead the Quakers with three RBI on a two-for-five afternoon with a home run. Holt led the Quakers at the plate in game one, batting three-for-four with the game-winning RBI. Casey Snead led the Quakers with their lone multi-hit effort in game two, finishing three-for-four.

Brady led the Hornets at the plate, batting four-for-six with three RBI and two home runs.

Carver (6-3) claimed the game-one win for the Quakers, striking out one and walking five in a complete-game effort. Lackey (7-2) took the complete-game win in game two, striking out three batters while facing only two batters above the minimum.

Lindsay Corbin (3-7) claimed the game-one loss for Shenandoah, fanning four and walking three in a complete-game effort. Carrie Robinson (4-7) claimed the game-two loss where she struck out two and walked four.

The Quakers continue a weekend ODAC homestand tomorrow, hosting Eastern Mennonite University for a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader.
