Elon WLAX Rallies to Defeat Blue Hens in OT

ELON, N.C. – Trailing 4-0 to visiting Delaware, the Elon women’s lacrosse team rallied to even the score and tie the game in regulation before an overtime goal by Shelby Scanlin gave the Phoenix the 5-4 sudden victory tonight, April 8, at Rudd Field. The game was the first Colonial Athletic Association contest of the season for the maroon and gold and the first overtime game in program history.

The Phoenix (8-3, 1-0 CAA) outshot UD, 22-20, and claimed the advantage in draw controls, 9-4. Elon finished with a total of 16 ground balls and went 17-of-20 in clear attempts. Both Scanlin and Stephanie Asher netted two scores for the Phoenix with Nicole Sinacori scoring the other, while Sloane Kessler tallied an assist. Scanlin led all players with five draws followed by two draws and three ground balls from Anna Vitton.

On defense, Rachel Ramirez recorded the win in goal with 12 saves on the day, while also tallying two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Asher and Alexis Zadjura each finished with two caused turnovers with another three ground balls for Zadjura.

The Blue Hens (8-5, 0-2 CAA) took 20 shots in the game, 16 of which were on goal, picked up 16 ground balls and went 16-of-18 in clear attempts. Becky Gohsler led UD with two scores followed by one each from Coley Ricci and Kara Dattellas. Taylor Carpenter took the loss between the pipes after nine saves on the night and a game-high four ground balls.

Highlights
Goals by Gohselr and Dattellas put the Blue Hens up 2-0 by the 24:52 mark in the first half. While Elon struggled to get shots off, UD found itself up by three, 3-0, with under 12 minutes to play.

After Gohsler netted her second goal with 5:39 remaining for a 4-0 Delaware lead, Zadjura claimed a ground ball off a missed shot by the Blue Hens. From there, Elon was able to clear the ball as Asher got the Phoenix on the board with 1:57 left in the half.

With less than 45 seconds on the clock, UD claimed the ball off a missed Elon shot but turned it over on the clear attempt, allowing Asher to grab the ground ball and find the back of the net with just nine ticks left to make it a 4-2 game at the break.

The maroon and gold wasted no time picking up where it left off, pulling within one, 4-3, just 36 seconds into the second half after Vitton won the draw that led to an Asher score with 29:24 on the clock.

Both defenses played strong in the second half before Kessler got the ball to Sinacori, who netted the tying goal with 4:35 remaining. Neither team was able to tally another score in regulation, leading to overtime.

In the second overtime, Shannon Horan claimed the draw that led to the Scanlin game winner just 30 seconds later.
