GEORGETOWN, S.C. – Senior Tan Cheeranont is tied for 18th after opening round action at the Big South Championship to lead the High Point University women’s golf team at the DeBordieu Club.
Cheeranont went out in 41 but rallied with a strong second nine to earn the top-20 standing. She shot 37 on her par-36 second nine, highlighted by a birdie at the par-5 sixth hole. She was t-4th overall in par-5 scoring (-1) for the day.
Junior Danielle Fuss made 11 pars on her round and currently sits t-26th after shooting an 18-hole total of 80, while sophomore Cayla Smith is t-33rd after carding an 82 (+10).
Freshman Sandrine Yesilian made seven pars on her round and is t-40th.
The Panthers currently are in ninth place after shooting a combined score of 329. Coastal Carolina leads the tournament after 18 holes (294).
“I am not sure the individual scores reflected the quality of play today,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “Tan had a good back nine. Sandrine had a strong front nine for us as well. Cayla and Danielle just need to be more careful with club selection, but for the most part, we hit the ball very well as a team. Tomorrow, in order to improve, we will need to work hard for pars and also make adjustments according to the potential for wind and weather.”
HPU resumes play at the Big South Championship Tuesday. The Panthers will tee off from hole No. 10 beginning at 9 a.m.
