CHARLESTON, S.C. – UNCG Baseball earned its 25th win of the season on Sunday afternoon at Joseph P. Reilly Park, 7-4 over The Citadel Bulldogs, marking the most wins in a single season under head coach Link Jarrett. UNCG improves to 25-8 overall, and is 5-1 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel falls to 13-20, and 3-3 in the SoCon.

“To come on the road, and win a series in the league is very important.” Coach Jarrett said, “Yesterday was a tough game and our pregame preparation today was as good as I’ve ever seen. Offensively, the sixth inning, our at bats were really good across the board and we were able to put three across. Sykes, maybe wasn’t as sharp as he normally is, but got us through a few innings. Then Woody came in and closed the door, that’s a good win. I’m pleased with the way our guys played and the way we prepared. Frisbee gave us a quality start. For him to come in on a Sunday, knowing what was at stake, and to give us that quality start, that’s good for him and he’ll learn from that and continue to get better. I’m really proud of our team.”

The Spartans racked up 14 hits in the contest, led by Dillon Stewart’s (Dunn, N.C./Brunswick CC) 3-for-4, two RBI, two runs scored performance. UNCG had four players connect for two hits. Michael Goss (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga St. CC) finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored a run.

Andrew Moritz (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) finished with two hits and a run scored. Collin Woody (Tampa, Fla./College of Central Florida) finished with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Jake Kusz (Durham, N.C./Riverside) went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC), L.J. Kalawaia (Wailuku, Hawai’i/Ohlone College) Ryne Sigmon (Danville, Va./Danville CC) each connected for one hit.

Matt Frisbee (Candler, N.C./Enka) (2-2) logged another quality start. Frisbee went 6.0 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, struck out six without walking a batter. Chad Sykes (Creedmoor, N.C./Voyager Academy) worked 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and a pair of earned runs to go with three strikeouts. Woody earned his first save of the season, using seven pitches to retire the side in the ninth.

The Citadel got on the board first, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning. After a bunt by Shy Phillips was misplayed, Phillips stole second. Mike Deese singled to bring in Phillips and put the Bulldogs up 1-0 early.

UNCG took the lead in the top of the fourth inning. After Woody singled to start the frame, a double from Stewart brought him in from first to tie the game up. Goss followed with a two-out double to left center to bring in Stewart and put the Spartans up 2-1.

The Bulldogs answered back, tying it up at two in the bottom of the fourth. After a two out single and hit batter, Steven Hansen hit a single to right field allowing the run to score.

The Spartans regained the lead in the top of the sixth frame. After a one out walk to Stewart, Sigmon connected for a single before back-to-back doubles from Goss and Kusz brought in three and the Spartans took a 5-2 lead.

UNCG added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Moritz led off with a single and scored when Woody hit what looked to be his sixth home run, but had it bounce off the top of the wall in left center and back into the field of play for a double. Stewart followed with a double to right center, but was thrown out going for third on the play. The Spartans led 7-2 at the stretch.

The Citadel clawed their way back into the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. With the first two batters of the inning reaching on a single and a walk, three wild pitches moved the runners around and scored one. Steven Hansen hit a sacrifice fly to right to cut the lead to 7-4, Spartans.

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday, April 12th as they travel to Winston-Salem to take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons at 6:00 p.m.
