Elon Women’s Tennis Defeats USC Upstate 6-1 in Regular Season Finale

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Although the Spartans took the doubles point and the early 1-0 lead, the Elon University women’s tennis team swept singles action to claim a 6-1 victory in its regular season finale on Thursday, April 14, at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.

The Phoenix improves to 13-9 overall with the win and USC Upstate falls to 0-20 with the loss. Elon closes out the regular season and heads into the CAA Tennis Championships on an eight-match winning streak.

“I am proud of the team’s hard work and for finishing the regular season strong,” said head coach Elizabeth Anderson. “We are excited about the conference tournament next weekend and we are very excited to be hosting the tournament at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.”

HIGHLIGHTS
The Spartans clinched the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match after claiming victories on courts one and two. Anna Zoske and Filippa Ericson clinched the point with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 position. Suzanne Zenoni and Olivia Lucas picked up Elon’s lone win in doubles play with a 6-0 shutout on court three.

Senior Taylor Casey got things started in singles action and tied the match at 1-1 with her clean sweep of Rudy Kubac at the No. 6 position. Kirsten Ward followed it up with a perfect sweep of her own on court five to give the Phoenix a 2-1 lead.

Suzanne Zenoni put Elon in position to clinch the victory with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles against Carol Sigaki. Lucas would clinch the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 against Zoske to give the Phoenix a match-deciding 4-1 lead. It was a seventh consecutive singles win for Lucas as she improved her season mark to 11-9 overall.

Erica Braschi and Natalia Janowicz followed up with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively to complete Elon’s 6-1 win over USC Upstate. Braschi won her 11th consecutive singles match and improves to 15-4 overall this season.

UP NEXT
The Phoenix will begin action in the 2016 CAA Women’s Tennis Championships, April 21-24, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. It will mark the first-ever CAA Tournament hosted by the Phoenix and first conference tournament hosted by the program since the 2013 SoCon Tournament.
