GREENSBORO, N.C. – Hampden-Sydney College’s Lee Carneal tallied five RBI over Saturday afternoon’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with Guilford College as Guilford fell twice to Hampden-Sydney. The Tigers claimed game one, 6-4, and the nightcap, 8-4.
The Quakers (16-20, 5-14 ODAC) moved around the bases quickly in the bottom of the second inning of game one after a Chuck Noble lead-off triple led to an A.J. Girting ground out in the next at-bat to bring Noble home to claim an early lead. The Quakers held to the lead until the top of the fifth when Carneal brought home two runs with a two-out single. The Tigers (23-13, 9-8 ODAC) extended their lead two innings later with a three-run rally that featured two sacrifice flies. The Quakers countered with a Nathan Fulbright sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth, producing the second out. After the Tigers countered with their third sacrifice fly of the game one half-inning later, the Quakers mounted a two-run rally as Guilford loaded the bases with no outs when Kyle Humphrey singled up the middle to cut into the lead. The Tigers regained control, ending the game with a double play to claim the win.
The Tigers jumped to an 8-0 lead through six innings of game two as Carneal posted two RBI in the second contest. The Quakers produced a rally in the bottom of the eighth inning as Guilford took advantage of three Hampden-Sydney errors in the inning to post three runs. Josh Shepherd’s fielder’s choice ground ball with the bases loaded and one out forced a high throw over second base that would eventually clear the bases as a fielding error occurred in the outfield as the second run was scored. Guilford produced two hits with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning in a comeback bid as Grayson Tuttle drove home Logan Jones before a ground out one at-bat later ended the contest.
Noble finished four-for-eight over the doubleheader with a triple, tallying two hits in each contest. Humphrey finished game one two-for-five with two RBI while Fulbright finished two-for-four with one RBI as the top four batters in Guilford’s game-one order totaled two hits apiece.
Drew Martin (1-1) took the loss in game one throwing two middle-relief innings as the Quakers threw five pitchers on Guilford’s Senior Day. Jake Watkins earned the started and threw two scoreless innings where he fanned two batters. Parks Smithey (1-8) claimed the loss in game two as he struck out five and walked eight. John Todd struck out seven of the 12 batters he faced in three and one-thrd innings, giving up just one hit.
Reggie Johnson (4-2) took the win for the Tigers in a five-inning effort where he struck out three and walked one. Teddy West (7-3) took the game two win where he fanned five and walked two.
The Quakers finish their regular season with a four-game road trip, beginning Tuesday for a 3 p.m. ODAC contest at Lynchburg College.
