College Softball Finals – Virginia Wesleyan 10–7, Guilford 0–3

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan College’s Mary Shipp threw a two-hitter in game one as Guilford College dropped a Sunday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with Virginia Wesleyan. The Marlins claimed game one, 10-0, in five innings and took the nightcap, 7-3.

Virginia Wesleyan boosted their offense with a seven-run second inning as the Marlins rallied to score four runs with two outs. A Kiersten Richardson home run with two-outs extended the lead in the fourth inning on the way to victory.

The Marlins jumped to a 1-0 lead after one inning, but the Quakers came to life in the top of the second inning as Shelby Helms connected on her seventh home run of the season with one out to tie the game. The Marlins reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third inning as a sacrifice fly brought in two runs as an error on the throw brought home the second run on the play. The Quakers tied the contest in the top of the fifth inning as Makayla Carver knocked a two-out double into right center field and advanced to third base on a throwing error as the first run of the inning came home. Carver scored during the next at-bat on a wild pitch to even the score. The Marlins rallied with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning to produce a four-run rally in a five-hit inning as Cassetty Howerin hit the only extra-base hit of the inning with a two-RBI double as the Marlins secured the win.

Carver finished two-for-five with one RBI and a double to lead the Quakers. Caroline Barnette was the remaining Quakers with multiple hits over the doubleheader, batting two-for-four.

The Quakers close out the regular season next Saturday with a 1 p.m. ODAC doubleheader with Bridgewater College on Haworth Field.
