Hopkins leads HPU Men’s Golf after day one

• Redshirt-sophomore AJ Hopkins paced the squad with a first round score of 78
• High Point finishes the first day with a combined score of 317 to sit in 10th place
• The squad will continue play at the Big South Championship tomorrow with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start

NINETY-SIX, S.C. – The High Point University men’s golf team wrapped up its first day of play at the Big South Championship with a first round score of 317 to sit in 10th place.

Redshirt-sophomore AJ Hopkins led the squad during the first round notching a score of 78. Hopkins is tied thirrd in par 3 scoring (3.00, E) and tied for eighth in par 4 scoring (4.40, +4). The Thousand Oaks, Calif. native recorded 10 pars and three birdies to currently sit tied for 32nd.

Senior McKay Tye and freshman Christian Casignal follow close behind recording matching totals of 79 after the first round. Tye and Casingal currently sit tied for 39th at the Championship.

Emile Menard, a sophomore, finished the first round recording 10 pars and a birdie. Menard notched a score of 81 and sits tied for 47th.

Sophomore Connor Alexander rounds off the Panthers finishing the first day with a score of 87.

Liberty holds the tournament title with a combined score of 286. Campbell (289), Charleston Southern (290), Winthrop (293), and Gardner-Webb (299) round off the top-five.

The squad will continue play at the tournament tomorrow morning at the first tee with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. High Point will tee off at 8:30 a.m. along with No. 9 Longwood University.

The squad will start 10th tee with the following starting times: Connor Alexander at 8:30 a.m., Emile Menard at 8:40 a.m., Christian Casingal at 8:50 a.m., McKay Tye at 9:00 a.m. and AJ Hopkins at 9:10 a.m.
