WLAX: Second Half Powers Elon Past Dragons

PHILADELPHIA – Trailing by two at the break, a 6-0 advantage in the second half led the Elon women’s lacrosse team to an 8-4 win at Drexel tonight, April 22, at Vidas Field in Philadelphia.

The Phoenix (9-5, 2-2 CAA) outshot the Dragons (9-6, 2-3 CAA), 23-17, claimed eight ground balls and seven draws and finished 10-of-12 in clear attempts. Maeve Cowley led all players after scoring four goals off four shots to match her career high. Stephanie Asher netted three goals to reach 30 on the season, while Shelby Scanlin and Sloane Kessler each tallied a point with a goal and assist, respectively.

The maroon and gold defense held DU to only three shots in the second half and eight total shots on goal with Rachel Ramirez posting four saves for the win between the pipes to go along with one caused turnover and one ground ball. Melanie McHugh had a game-high three ground balls, while Cowley and Alexis Zadjura each posted two draw controls.

The Dragons finished with 17 total shots, nine ground balls, seven draws and 7-of-10 in clear attempts. Lauren Gerrie led Drexel with two scores on the night with Lacey Aghazarian tallying two assists. Carlee Ries took the loss in goal after nine saves and three ground balls.

Highlights
After Drexel got on the board first, Asher responded at the 24:03 mark to even the game. A save by Ramirez led to a successful clear and a goal by Cowley with 19:08 on the clock to keep the game even, 2-2, before the Dragons netted two more goals in the half to lead 4-2 at the break.

The Phoenix came out on a tear in the second half with Asher scoring back-to-aback goals in the first six minutes to tie the game, six-all, with 24:56 remaining. With 18:21 on the clock, Cowley netted the first of two straight to give Elon its first lead of the game, 5-4, before putting the maroon and gold ahead by two, 6-4, off a free-position goal at the 13:32 mark.

Scanlin got in on the 5-0 run with her 19th goal of the season off a pass from Kessler to make it a three-goal lead for the Phoenix, 7-4, with 10:41 to play. Cowley scored her fourth goal of the game off a free-position shot with under seven minutes left on the clock to cap the 6-0 half for the Phoenix.
