College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 6, Randolph 5 (overtime)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Andrew McDonagh’s unassisted goa 1:46 into overtime gave Guilford College a thrilling 6-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse victory over visiting Randolph College Saturday in both teams’ regular-season finale. The Senior Day victory clinched the sixth and final spot in the upcoming ODAC Tournament.

McDonagh’s game winner game on the Quakers’ (8-8, 4-5 ODAC) second overtime possession. Guilford senior Connor Manning won the extra period’s opening draw, which led to a Quakers’ timeout. Dylan Haupt turned the ball over, which gave the WildCats (8-9, 3-6 ODAC) a crack at a game-winning goal. Randolph’s Shane Soghomonian had a clear shot on goal from 15 yards out, but Quakers’ goalie Parker Styles made the save, his sixth of the game, and started a successful clear.

Guilford patiently worked the ball around to McDonagh, who found some space on the right wing. He ripped a 15-yard blast to the goal’s top left corner and past Randolph netminder Cam Davis for the game-winning goal.

Guilford rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit thanks to a four-goal outburst over a two-and-a-half minute span in the third quarter. Daniel Haupt finally got the Quakers on the scoreboard with a man-up goal assisted by Adam Fiore. Alex Brownlee tied the game with an unassisted score 76 seconds later. Connor Manning won the ensuing face-off, passed to Fiore, who found an open Dylan Haupt, who buried the go-ahead score from close range. A WildCats’ penalty gave Guilford a man advantage for the third time and Dylan Haupt converted from long range off a Fiore feed, which swung the lead to Guilford, 4-3.

Randolph scored two quick goals to knot the game at 4-4 just into the final quarter. Ryan Campbell picked up a loose ball deflected by Styles in transition and caught the Quakers’ goalie away from the net as time expired in the third quarter. Soghomonian buried a Graham Southwick feed 32 seconds into the fourth quarter.

McDonagh put Guilford ahead, 5-4, with his first goal of the game at the 11:54 mark. Randolph responded with an Andrew Risse goal with 9:29 remaining. Styles made three saves the rest of the way, including one off a Risse shot with 1:38 left that would’ve put Randolph in front.

Dylan Haupt and McDonagh, two of the Quakers’ eight seniors honored prior to the contest, both scored twice. Haupt added an assist to share game-high scoring honors with Fiore, who dished out three assists. Manning won eight-of-14 draws and collected a game-high eight ground balls. In addition to six saves, Styles also caused two turnovers and picked up three ground balls.

Campbell and Risse both had a goal and an assist for Randolph, which had five different goal scorers. Davis stopped eight shots in goal and led the WildCats with four ground balls. Baden James forced three miscues and had two pickups.

Guilford earned the sixth seed for the upcoming ODAC Tournament and will play at third-seeded Hampden-Sydney College at a time to be determined May 3 in the quarterfinals.
