FISHERSVILLE, Va. – Bridgewater College advanced to the semifinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament Sunday with a 5-0 victory over Guilford College. The third-seeded Eagles (10-9) narrowly claimed all three doubles points and two singles matches in the contest, which was played indoors at the Augusta Health Lifetime Fitness Center due to rain.
Kyle Hatfield and Joe Dillenbeck downed Guilford’s Erik Meiler and Aaron Smedley at first doubles, 8-4, and the Eagles’ Thomas Rischoff and Emmett Johnson stopped Graham Pearson and Chasen Chacon at second doubles by the same score. Bridgewater’s Freddie Roberts and Nathaniel Horner dealt Guilford’s Mesa Martorell and Levi Bruff their first setback of the season at third doubles, 8-6. The Quakers’ tandem entered the match with a 9-0 overall record.
Hartfield overcame a first-set loss to beat Meiler at first singles, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Dillenbeck defeated the Quakers’ Mason Church at third singles, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) to clinch Bridgewater’s win and send it into a semifinal matchup with second-seeded Washington and Lee University, a 5-0 winner over number-seven Randolph College Sunday. Washington and Lee hosts the tournament semifinals and finals May 7-8.
Guilford, seeded sixth in the eight-team tourney, ends its season with a 5-10 overall record.
