Elon’s Caruso Tabbed CAA Softball Pitcher of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. – Senior pitcher Kayla Caruso of the Elon University softball team was named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon, May 2, as announced by the league office.

The Kennesaw, Ga., native threw the game of her life last Saturday, April 30, as she helped the Phoenix defeat sixth-ranked and conference leader James Madison, 5-4, in 15 innings. Caruso tossed all 15 innings for Elon and allowed four runs while striking out seven and walking only one batter. The 15 innings is the longest outing for any pitcher in the country this season as the Phoenix earned its second ever victory versus a top-10 ranked team. JMU is also the highest ranked win ever for the Phoenix, who previously earned a 5-2 victory over No. 8 Georgia in 2013 in Caruso’s freshman season. The victory also snapped the Dukes’ 42-game, CAA regular season win streak that dated back to 2014.

Elon closes out the regular season beginning this Friday, May 6, with a three-game series at Delaware. The Phoenix and the Blue Hens open with a single game on Friday at 3 p.m. before concluding the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 7, starting at noon.
