HPU baseball claims 30th win with 11-1 victory at Campbell

• High Point improved to 30-20 overall with an 11-1 win at Campbell on Sunday.
• Freshman Andrew Gottfried allowed one run in seven innings and improved to 6-4 for the season.
• Redshirt-junior Tim Mansfield went 4-5 with a walk, an RBI and two runs and finished the weekend 8-12 at the plate.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team reached the 30-win plateau with an 11-1 win over Campbell on Sunday afternoon in Buies Creek, N.C. Freshman Andrew Gottfried allowed just one run to and picked up his sixth win of the season for HPU.

“Today was a complete game for us,” head coach Craig Cozart said. “We played well in all aspects and the difference was mentality. Our guys came out and were ready to execute. Andrew Gottfried led the way on the mound and offensively we were very good up and down the lineup. Tim Mansfieldand it was nice to see Josh Greene get a couple hits. We need to bottle up this momentum and take it with us the rest of the season.”

Gottfried surrendered just one run in seven innings to earn the win for the Panthers. Gottfried allowed just five hits with no walks and struck out five to improve to 6-4 on the season.

Michael Horrell suffered the loss for Campbell and dropped to 5-5 on the season. The right-hander allowed five runs, three earned, on five hits and a walk in 3-1/3 innings while striking out one.

The win secures HPU’s third 30-win season in the Div. I era as the Panthers improve to 30-20 overall and 13-8 in the Big South. Campbell drops to 26-24 overall and 13-8 in conference play.

High Point took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI double by junior Josh Greene but the Camels came right back in the bottom of the frame and tied the contest back up on a solo home run by Matt Parrish.

The Panthers scored took advantage of three Campbell errors in the third to score twice, taking a 3-1 lead. Redshirt-junior Tim Mansfield reached on an error then came home on a throwing error by Zach Minnick on a double steal. Junior Chris Clare also scored on an RBI groundout by senior Dominic Fazio.

Sophomore Carson Jackson added to the HPU lead with a solo shot to lead off the fourth, his sixth of the season. The Panthers tacked on two more runs in the inning to go ahead 6-1, scoring the first on an error by Wes Noble on a pickoff attempt and the second on an RBI single by Clare.

The Panthers continued to extend their lead with two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to go ahead, 9-1. HPU scored twice on sacrifice flies by Fazio and redshirt-sophomore Zach Vandergrift in the seventh and added another run on an RBI single by Clare in the eighth.

High Point tacked on two final runs in the ninth on a bases-loaded walk by Zente and an RBI single by Clare to bring the final score to 11-1.

Mansfield continued his impressive weekend, going 4-5 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored in the series finale. Clare went 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while Jackson and Greene both finished 2-4. Jackson had one RBI and three runs scored and Greene had an RBI and two runs scored.

The Panthers wrap up the 2016 regular season with four-straight home games beginning with a midweek matchup against Davidson on Tuesday, May 17, at 6 p.m. High Point lost at Davidson in 10 innings earlier this season in the first of two meetings between the squads.
