College Men’s Tennis News – Guilford Trio Lands All-ODAC Recognition

FOREST, Va. – Guilford College’s John Brvenik (Pine Knoll Shores, N.C./E.O. Smith (Conn.)), Levi Bruff (Lexington, N.C./Central Davidson) and Mesa Martorell (Wimberly, Texas/Wimberly) earned All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tennis honors Tuesday according to voting by the league’s head men’s tennis coaches. Brvenik was a first-team selection at first singles, while Bruff and Martorell were honored as second-team honorees at third doubles.

John Brvenik 2016

Brvenik posted a 6-1 record in seven league matches, including five in the sixth-singles spot. The first-time all-league selection also won a fourth-singles match versus Emory & Henry College and a fifth-singles contest over Hampden-Sydney College. Brvenik had a 6-6 overall singles record and was 0-2 in two doubles matches in the fall. His six singles victories eclipsed his career high and ranked fourth on the team.

In four seasons Brvenik logged an 18-23 overall singles record, including an 18-13 ledger in dual matches. He was winless in eight career doubles contests. A regular on Guilford’s Student-Athlete Honor Roll and Academic All-ODAC honoree, Brvenik graduated May 14 with his degree in sport management.

Bruff and Martorell joined forces early in the spring season and were nearly invincible. The third-doubles tandem won their first nine contests together before falling, 8-6, to opponents from Bridgewater College in an ODAC Tournament quarterfinal contest May 1. Bruff and Martorell knocked off the third-doubles pair from 25th-ranked Washington and Lee University in the midst of their nine-match winning streak. Five opponents managed one or fewer points against the Guilford duo.

Levi Bruff 2017

Bruff, a junior, posted an 8-5 overall singles record and a club-best 11-6 overall doubles mark. He led the Quakers with 19 overall victories and shared the team lead with eight singles wins. Bruff went 6-4 at fifth singles and scored a win over Hampden-Sydney in his lone fourth-singles appearance of the year.

Mesa Martorell 2018

Martorell, a sophomore, went 7-10 in singles play and 10-8 in doubles. His 17 combined wins stood second only to Bruff, as did his 10 doubles triumphs. Martorell played the bulk of his singles contests in the number-two position where he went 5-5. He won just one of his four contests at third singles and went 0-5 when teamed with senior Erik Meiler (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) at first doubles.

The trio helped coach Dave McCain’s Quakers to a 5-10 overall record (5-5 ODAC). A late-season surge helped Guilford reach the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals where Bridgewater ended the Quakers’ season with a 5-0 decision. McCain may return as many as seven letter winners next season, including Bruff and Martorell.
