NCHSAA State Lacrosse Championships set for Friday & Saturday in Cary

CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association is set to host the annual Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Championships on Friday and Saturday at Wake Med Soccer Stadium in Cary. This is the seventh year that the Association has conducted championships in the sport.

The Men’s 1A/2A/3A State Championship will be held at 7:30 on Friday, May 20th. The teams that will vie for the title are yet to be determined as weather forced the postponement of the regional finals on Tuesday evening. The Eastern Regional Final is scheduled for Wednesday night, May 18th at Carrboro High School as the Jaguars host cross-town rival Chapel Hill. The Western Regional Final is also scheduled for Wednesday night as Northern Guilford hosts Marvin Ridge. The Western Final will be held at Greensboro College. Both regional finals are scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

The 4A Men’s Championship will also pit Cardinal Gibbons against Lake Norman. Lake Norman makes their third appearance in the Men’s Lacrosse State Championship game. They defeated Cardinal Gibbons in 2012 to win the school’s only Men’s Lacrosse state title. Cardinal Gibbons returns to the State Championship game for the third year in a row and their fourth time in program history. Gibbons holds the last two 1A/2A/3A State Championships as the Crusaders defeated Marvin Ridge in each of the last two championship games. The Men’s game is slated for a 12:00 noon. faceoff on Saturday following the Women’s Championship.

The Women’s Open Division Championship features a rematch of last year’s State Championship between Eastern Champion Cardinal Gibbons and Western Champion Lake Norman. Lake Norman won an exciting 17-15 overtime thriller to win the school’s first Women’s Lacrosse state title. The game is scheduled to face-off at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 21st.

Admission for the Championship is $8 per day. The Western Regional Champion will be considered the home team on both the scoreboard and for jersey purposes. The official hashtag for each championship on social media is #NCHSAAMLAX for the Men’s Championship and #NCHSAAWLAX for the Women’s Championship.
