GREENSBORO, N.C. – South Granville secured their second straight fast-pitch softball State Championship knocking off West Lincoln 10-5 in game three of the 2A State Championship series. The Vikings exploded for 8 runs in the second inning as they batted around with nine hits in the inning.
Abbi Colclough led the bottom of the second off with a double, and the rest of the Vikings jumped on board. Miranda Barker, the Vikings pitcher, helped her own cause following up Colclough’s double with an RBI single. West Lincoln pitcher Cassidy Wise retired the next two South Granville batters, but a Savannah Tilley single and Briana Coleman double chased her from the game.
Sophomore Addison Rhyne came in for the Rebels and South Granville bats greeted her rudely as Hunter Mundy and Megan White both singled to turn the order over and plate two more runs. Mundy and White both came around on a double by Colclough. Then Baker came up for the second time in the inning and ripped a single to score Colclough and give the Vikings an 8-1 advantage.
West Lincoln scrapped for two runs in the top of the third inning, aided by four South Granville errors, which trimmed the Viking lead to 8-3. The Rebels added a pair in the sixth as well as Raeven McCrodden slashed a one-out single before coming around to score on an RBI-double by Jessica Adams. Adams later scored on Meredith Ferguson’s RBI single.
With a comfortable lead, South Granville pitcher Miranda Barker kept the Rebels at arm’s length all afternoon, working a complete game giving up five runs, four earned, on eight hits while striking out three and walking five batter.
South Granville’s Megan White was named the series M.V.P. She was 3 for 4 in game three scoring two runs and knocking in two as well. In game one of the series she was also 3 for 4 with a homer at the plate, scoring twice and batting in four.
