Morehead City, N.C. – The High Point-Thomasville HiToms (5-5) controlled the game for seven and half innings before surrendering all four Morehead City Marlin (7-3) runs in the bottom of the eighth. HPT takes a five-hour road trip back to Thomasville after a 4-3 heartbreaking loss on Saturday night.

As they’ve done before on the road, the HiToms put a couple of runs on the scoreboard first. In the top of the third, Danny Sullivan cracked a double off of the left field wall to plate the first run of the game. Zac Almond followed that up with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field scoring Carson Jackson.

Cesar Trejo went blast off to deep left field on a solo homer to tack on another run against Morehead City starting pitcher Patrick Peterson who lasted four innings in his Coastal Plain League debut.

The score would remain 3-0 in favor of the HiToms until the bottom of the eighth inning with Kaylor Chafin on out of the bullpen. With a runner at first and one out , Tyler Weyenberg hit a ground ball to short that was kicked to center field by HPT shortstop Cesar Trejo putting runners at second and third.

Logan Welch (0-1) was called out the bullpen and got a lineout right back to him for the first out. The next pitch wasn’t as lucky as Christian Campbell delivered a 2-RBI single to plate the first runs of the game for the Marlins.

Just a batter later, Romeo Cortina sent a 2-run go-ahead homer over the left field fence to give Morehead City a 4-3 lead even though they entered the eighth inning with only one hit.

John Luke Curtis (2-1) went the long haul with 5 innings of the bullpen striking out eight batters and setting the HiToms down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth to seal a 4-3 come from behind Marlins victory.

The HiToms can rest with two days off before returning to play at Finch Field on Tuesday, June 11 at 7:00 p.m. against the Forest City Owls.
