HiToms grind out road win at Wilson

Wilson, N.C. – In an entertaining inter-division matchup, the High Point-Thomasville HiToms (15-6) were victorious again in extra innings this time on the road 4-3 against the Wilson Tobs (12-10). The gritty win made possible by a RBI single from Brad Jarreau gives the HiToms their eighth straight win.

The HiToms left early in the morning on train to visit Wilson like the players back in the day would.

Wilson’s hot bats struck first in the bottom of the second on a RBI single by CJ Ballard and Greg Jones added another run on a groundout sent off of the glove of HPT starting pitcher Taylor Sugg.

This season, the HiToms have made a difference with the long ball and Zac Almond delivered a game changing three run homer over the left field wall in the top of the fifth.

Down 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth the Tobs quickly got the run back on a RBI sac-fly by Bryson Bowman to even up the score.

Sugg in his first start of the season went six innings letting up three runs on nine hits and struck out two hitters. Andrew Dill came in relief and was the player of the game going 3 1/3 innings keeping the HiToms in it by maneuvering out of a bases loaded jam with the score still tied in the bottom of the ninth.

In extras both teams exchanged goose eggs including Reid Clements (2-0) setting down the Tobs in order in the bottom of the tenth.

Jarreau broke through in extra innings in the top of the eleventh on a single that squeaked into center field scoring David Fry as the go-ahead run to elevate the HiToms to a 4-3 lead.

The Tobs loaded up the bases with one out in their half of the eleventh but a Clements strikeout and a chopper to first base handled by Hunter Slater ended the game as the HiToms grinded out a gritty 4-3 road win.

The HiToms return to Finch Field tomorrow, June 26 at 5 p.m. versus the Petersburg Generals.
