Pilots win rain-shortened game against HiToms

High Point/Thomasville, N.C. – In a rain delay that lasted over an hour the High Point-Thomasville HiToms (16-7) ultimately lost a rain-shortened five-inning contest 7-2 at the hands of the Peninsula Pilots (17-6) on Monday night. The HiToms franchise record nine game winning streak is snapped against the Coastal Plain League East Division leading Pilots.

Peninsula started early with an RBI double bouncing fair down the third base line in the top of the first inning.

The Pilots league leading offense attack continued in the top of the third with a three run homer to left field off of the bat of Darian Carpenter. Trevor Gay (0-1) made his return to the HiToms after an all-star season in 2015 lasting three innings surrendering 4 runs all earned while striking out two batters.

Brandon Lewis in relief didn’t fair much better also letting up a three-run shot this time to Will Shephered to dead center as the Pilots led 7-0 after four innings.

It had been raining for a little while but it really started pouring in the bottom of the fifth just a half inning away from being an official game. That’s when the HiTom bats woke up with their run coming in with a help of a couple Peninsula errors. Carson Jackson punched an RBI single to left making the score 7-2 with the HiToms still trailing.

Before the sixth ever started the tarp was rolled on and after a 40-minute rain delay was pulled off but eventually the rain never went away for good. After an hour and 20 minute delay the ball game was officially called with the Pilots hanging on 7-2.

Devin Mahoney (2-0) earned the win in the rain-shortened game going the full five innings, only allowing three hits and striking out a pair of HiTom batters.

The HiToms are off tomorrow and then play two games in a doubleheader starting at 6:05 p.m. in Martinsville on Wednesday
