Coastal Carolina coach Gary Gilmore

How many of you remember this game in Raleigh on Tuesday June 7, when Coastal Carolina stole one from N.C. State???
Final from Raleigh on Tuesday afternoon:Coastal Carolina 7, N.C. State 5…Coastal Carolina moves on to the NCAA Super Regional and N.C. State’s season is over…N.C. State hits a Coastal Carolina batter with two outs in the Top of the 9th and the count was at 1-2 on the batter and that loaded the bases and Coastal Carolina proceeded to add on a total of 4 runs in the top of the ninth and the Chanticleers go on and get the win and N.C. State is done…Big comeback by Coastal….
(This might be one of the tougher losses in N.C. State baseball history being up 5-4 and just a strike away from the win…Low-liner to Brock Deatherage in right field and he went down to make the catch, for what would have been the third out to end the game, but he couldn’t come up with the ball for the out…Season over for State and Coastal Carolina moves on in the NCAA’s)……
+++++Deatherage still says he had that ball for the out…+++++

Late HiTom rally falls short against Blowfish:Daniel Frey on the CPL Trail
from Daniel Frey with HiToms Baseball

High Point/Thomasville, N.C. – The High Point-Thomasville HiToms (17-9) hit four homers and scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth but five errors proved to be too costly in a 10-9 loss to Lexington County (16-11) on Thursday night.

Daniel Sullivan launched a solo homer over the right center field fence to get the HiToms on the board first in the bottom of the second.

A RBI groundout by Jared Williams tied the game up in the top of the third inning and Jordan Wren unloaded on a two-run shot to right field to put the Blowfish on top 3-1. In the bottom half of the third Brad Jarreau lifted his fourth long ball of the season over the left field fence make it 3-2 Blowfish.

The HiToms waited to take the lead back until the bottom of the fifth when the bats got to former HiTom and Blowfish starting pitcher Ryan Hedrick (2-0). David Sheaffer dropped a double into the gap and was brought around by a two-run blast from Carson Jackson.

Lexington County immediately answered with help from HiTom miscues. Three errors plagued the HiToms in the top of the sixth as the Blowfish brought across five more runs with help from RBI doubles by Adam Renwick and Wren. Starting pitcher Daniel McCrary (1-2) was still put in the position to lose the game.

With the HiToms trailing 8-4 in the top of the seventh with two Blowfish on base, lightning was spotted over in the right field direction. The game was delayed for a scheduled 30 minutes due to lightning but then a sudden downpour forced the tarp to be put on. An hour later from the original delay start time is when play resumed.

Kael Jones worked out of a bases loaded jam but insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings still managed to cross the plate increasing the Lexington County lead to 10-4.

Down six runs in the bottom of the ninth, the HiToms began to chip away against Blowfish reliever Micah Carpenter. Sheaffer tallied his first RBI of the season with a single and Jackson delivered his third RBI legging out an infield single.

The score was 10-6 when Teddy Hoffman stepped in and promptly sent a three-run homer to the deepest part of Finch Field in dead center field. With two outs, the Blowfish advantage was cut back down to one but Sullivan grounded out to end the epic comeback with Lexington County winning 10-9.

The Asheboro Copperheads walloped Gastonia to clinch the Coastal Plain League West first half title and a playoff spot come August.

The HiToms are off tomorrow and hit the road on Saturday to play the Holly Springs Salamanders at 7 p.m.
