HiToms get back in win column
from Daniel Frey with the HiToms Baseball Club

Lexington, S.C. – The High Point-Thomasville HiToms (20-11) scored five runs in the first three innings and hold on to win 6-4 over the Lexington County Blowfish (18-15) on Thursday night.

The HiToms snapped a two game losing skid and came out with energy right away. An Adam Renwick throwing error brought in the first run of the ball game. Just a batter later, Teddy Hoffman blasted a two-run homer over the left field wall to put the HiToms ahead 3-0 after one inning.

HPT would continue to tack on runs on an RBI sacrifice fly by Drew Frederic in the second and David Fry did the same thing in the third to put the HiToms up 5-0 on Lexington County starter Ryan Hedrick (2-1).

Lexington County got on the board with a run scoring single in the bottom of the third by Daniel Edgeworth.

Trailing 5-1, the Blowfish bats woke up in the bottom of the fifth on a solo homer to the right corner off of the bat of Jordan Wren. Adam Renwick doubled in the inning seemingly scoring two runs but the Lexington County lead runner Brett Auckland missed touching third base and when HiToms starting pitcher Robert Donnelly (4-1) threw the ball to third, the third and final out was called with the two runs not counting as the HiToms still led 5-2.

The HiToms manufactured another run in the top of the sixth on another RBI sac-fly by Frederic and the extra cushion would be needed. In the top of the seventh after a run crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice up the middle, Mike Warren came in out of the bullpen for HPT and surrendered an RBI single to Grant Miller. After seven innings, the HiToms tried to hang on to a 6-4 lead.

Logan Welch dropped the hammer picking up the two inning save and he set down the final two batters on strikes to seal the 6-4 HiToms victory.

The HiToms return to Finch Field tomorrow, July 8 to host the Martinsville Mustangs at 7 p.m.
