HiToms pull away from Copperheads

Asheboro, N.C. – The High Point-Thomasville HiToms (23-15) snap a three game losing streak in a 9-2 rout of the Asheboro Copperheads (22-17) on the road.

Similar to last night the HiToms plated two runs in the top of the first on back-to-back RBI singles by Hunter Slater and Zac Almond.

Asheboro cut the early deficit in half on a run scoring punched to left from Deivy Palmeiro although the run was unearned for HiToms starting pitcher Daniel McCrary (2-2).

Danny Sullivan took advantage of a Jack Gomersall (2-3) pitch left over the middle of the plate in the top of the third and sent a solo homer over the left field fence for his fourth long ball of the season.

After five innings, the HiToms led 3-1 but still playing aggressively in the top of the sixth. Cesar Trejo back in the lineup stole third base and a wild throw rolled into left field allowing him to score. Just a moment later, Wyatt Cross drove in his fourth run of the year on a single to make it 5-1 HiToms.

McCrary threw six innings not allowing an earned run while walking two batters and striking out five Copperhead batters.

Insurance runs are always needed and David Fry delivered in the top of the ninth on a hard hit single. With runners at the corners, the next batter Zac Almond cranked his seventh homer to blow the game open 9-1.

Reid Clements tossed three solid innings in relief allowing one more Copperhead run to score in the ninth but that was it as the HiToms pulled away late to cruise 9-2 on Wednesday night.

The HiToms head back on the road tomorrow night to Martinsville at 7:17 p.m. to take on the Mustangs
