Elon Women’s Soccer Falls to App State, 4-1, in Preseason Exhibition

BOONE, N.C. – Junior forward Grace Bennett got the Elon University women’s soccer team on the board early, but four unanswered goals from Appalachian State led the Mountaineers to a 4-1 victory on Saturday, Aug. 13, at Appalachian Soccer Stadium. The Phoenix and Appalachian State played three 30-minute periods, plus an additional 15-minute extra time period in the exhibition matchup.

It did not take long for the Phoenix to strike first as Grace Bennett put away Tori Baliatico’s pass in the sixth minute to give Elon a 1-0 lead. The Phoenix held the 1-0 edge after the first period of play.

Appalachian State struck back in the second period with a goal from Jessica Easley in the 40thminute. Elon and the Mountaineers went into the third period tied at one goal apiece.

Less than 10 minutes into the final 30 minutes, the Mountaineers scored goals in the 68th and 69th minute respectively to extend their lead, 4-1. Brie Bahlmann scored the first cleaning up a loose ball in the box and Jackie Nieradka ripped a shot from 22 yards out to create a three-goal cushion.

The 15 minute extra time period went scoreless and App State claimed the 4-1 win. The Mountaineers had a 27-10 edge in shots and outcornered the Phoenix 7-2.
