College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 2, Ferrum 0

FERRUM, Va. – Guilford College’s Albion Ida (Burlington, N.C./Williams) scored the Quakers’ third penalty-kick goal in two games, leading the Quakers to a Wednesday evening victory over Ferrum College, 2-0.

The Panthers came off a stretch of firing four straight shots in a seven-minute stretch beginning in the 12th minute when the Panthers fouled Ida inside the box to earn him a shot from the mark. Ida booted the ball in the net in the 21st minute to claim an early lead. The Panthers applied pressure in the final 12 minutes of the half, firing four of the half’s last five shots as the Quakers stood firm to hold a one-goal lead.

Ferrum fired four of the first five shots in the opening 12 minutes of the second half before offensive chances settled for a middle 12-minute stretch of the period. The Quakers had picked up the pace offensively in the latter stages of the half, leading up to Ricky Aguilar’s (Sanford, N.C./Southern Lee) entry into the contest in the 85th minute. One minute later, Aguilar netted an insurance goal off of a feed from Mark Dandanell to ice the victory.

The Panthers out-shot the Quakers by a narrow 18-15 margin, but the Quakers fired more shots on target, 10-4. Ferrum held a narrow 2-1 edge in corner kicks as Guilford’s only corner kick came in the 84th minute.

Eric Hayes (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) made four saves in net for the Quakers. Ferrum’s Derek Thomas stopped eight shots.

The Quakers (3-0) return to action Saturday, facing the University of Mary Washington for a 4 p.m. contest at Averett University.
