Elon Phoenix Volleyball Earns Fifth Straight Win Against Hornets

ELON, N.C. – The Elon volleyball team posted its fifth straight win today, Sept. 10, with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-) victory over Delaware State in the Elon Phoenix Classic in Alumni Gym.

The Phoenix (8-2) was led by a career-high 12 kills by rookie Nori Thomas followed by eight kills from Ebony Scott. Rox Wood finished with 19 assists, while Kayla Agae and Morgan Maner posted 11 and 10 digs, respectively. Elon out-blocked the Hornets, 13-7, with a career-high six blocks from Elizabeth Coil and five by Thomas.

The Hornets (0-8) saw a team-high nine kills and seven digs from Sydney Armbrister, while Gabriella Enriquez posted a match-high 24 assists. On defense, Alliyah McBean had 18 digs and Ariana Stevens recorded six blocks.

How it Happened
With the first set tied at 15-all, the Phoenix used kills by Thomas and Agae, a block by Ally Karle and Scott and an Agae ace to finish out a 6-2 run and take a four-point edge, 21-17. The Hornets closed the gap back to two, 21-19, before kills by Scott and Agae helped finish out the set for a 25-19 win.

Three straight Elon blocks from Coil, Agae and Thomas put the maroon and gold out to a five-point lead, 9-4, to start the second set. DSU pulled within two, 12-10, as kills by Agae and Michelle Klein and a block from Coil and Wood extended the Phoenix advantage to seven, 18-11. Two blocks by Klein and Thomas in the final three points helped give the maroon and gold a 25-15 win and take a 2-0 match lead.

With the third set tied at six-all, Elon used the serve of Agae and Maner to go on a 10-1 run that was helped by a block and two kills from both Coil and Scott to take a 16-7 lead. Kills by Wood and Thomas extended the advantage to 14, 23-9, before another Thomas kill closed out the set, 25-14, and the match.
