Elon Volleyball Phoenix Continues Win Streak Against Tigers

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Elon volleyball team extended its winning streak to eight straight matches after a 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-8) final against Savannah State today, Sept. 16, in the Bulldog Invitational in McAlister Field House on the campus of The Citadel.

The Phoenix (11-2) was led by a double-double from Sydney Busa who tallied a season-high 11 kills and a career-high 17 digs. Kam Terry and Ally Karle followed with eight and seven kills, respectively, while Rox Wood finished with 20 assists. On defense, the maroon and gold out-blocked SSU, 12-0, with the help of eight total blocks by Karle and another four from Terry.

The Tigers (0-13) saw a team-high five kills from both Caitlynn Masoe and Charlinda Colbert, while Alee Quint finished with eight assists. Alexis Washington tallied a match-high 20 digs followed by another 11 digs from Alaina Monroe.

How it Happened
With the first tied at three-all, kills by Curry and Terry and a block by Ebony Scott and Karle helped the Phoenix to four straight for a 7-3 lead. With Elon still holding the edge, 10-9, a 15-0 run, which was capped by a Karle kill, finished out the set for a 25-9 Phoenix win.

The second set saw six ties by the time the score reached eight-all. The Tigers managed to take a five-point lead, 17-12, before the maroon and gold answered with seven straight with the help of a kill by Scott, ace by Maddie Jaudon and solo block by Klein to move in front, 19-17. Elon continued its attack to claim six of the last eight points as a kill from Terry won the set, 25-19.

In the third set, two aces by Erin Kelly helped the Phoenix to a quick 6-1 advantage, forcing an early SSU timeout. An ace by Nori Thomas moved Elon ahead by seven, 10-3, as a Busa kill, Terry and Elizabeth Coil block and Terry kill made it a nine-point lead, 13-4. With the maroon and gold in front by eight, 15-7, a Terry kill sparked a 10-1 run to close out the set, 25-8, and five the Phoenix the sweep.
