Tomic Highlights Elon Men’s Tennis at ECU Shootout

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Petar Tomic achieved a combined record of 5-1 to lead the Elon University men’s tennis team at the ECU Fall Shootout this weekend, the squad’s first event of the fall season.

The six-team field was made up of Elon, East Carolina, UNC Greensboro, James Madison, College of Charleston and Richmond. Tomic, Felipe Osses-Konig, Taylor Foote and Neal Port competed for the Phoenix, with the rest of the team in action at the Duke James Bonk Invite.

“This was a good weekend overall,” Elon assistant coach Cesar Vargas said. “The competition was strong, and I think our team gained valuable experience that should help us throughout the season. I was proud of the way we competed, especially in singles with Petar and Felipe.”

HIGHLIGHTS
Tomic began the event with a 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 6-1 victory against Richmond’s Canyon Teague in the Pirate Ship singles flight. He earned another three-set win in his second match, a 7-6(7), 1-6, 6-1 triumph over Will Albright of UNCG. Tomic completed his perfect singles weekend with a third three-set win against College of Charleston’s Ryan Khan.

Also competing in the Pirate Ship singles flight was Osses-Konig, who went 2-1. He suffered a loss to ECU’s James Ling before bouncing back to defeat Benni Henning of College of Charleston and Warren Bryan of UNCG.

Port and Foote participated in The Cannon singles flight. Port dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to UNCG’s Ian Melnik on Friday and won matches against ECU’s Fredric Lehfeldt and College of Charleston’s Franz Sydow to finish 2-1 in singles play.

Foote competed alongside Tomic in doubles play, and the duo went 2-1 in the Portside doubles flight. The pairing defeated Kusmider/Kichigin of College of Charleston and topped Albright/Bryan of UNCG.

Port and Osses-Konig teamed up in doubles play, going 2-2 on the weekend. The duo’s lone win was a 7-5 victory against James Madison’s Lanthiez/Moorehead.
