College Men’s Soccer Final – Bridgewater 2, Guilford 1 (OT)

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College’s Reanto Grgic scored the go-ahead goal 6:35 into overtime as Guilford College fell in a Saturday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest to Bridgewater, 2-1.

Bridgewater broke the ice in the 19th minute as Dustin Herd scored for the Eagles to claim an early lead after a Matthew Pagano shot hit the crossbar.

After holding off the Eagles for the rest of the period, the Quakers responded quickly in the second half as Ricky Aguilar fired a shot from 15 yards out to tie the score. Guilford’s defense held as Bridgewater countered with five shots over the next five minutes. After each side traded a corner kick, the Eagles fired six straight shots from the 69th minute to the 79th minute as the Quakers’ defense held. The Quakers produced two shots in the latter stage of the second half as the scored stayed tied, 1-1.

Guilford fired two shots off in the overtime period in an effort to complete the comeback bid. Bridgewater broke through in the 97th minute as Grgic netted the game-winning goal to earn the victory.

Bridgewater out-shot Guilford, 23-9, and held a slight edge in corner kicks, 7-4.

Eric Hayes (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) made six saves in net for the Quakers. Bridgewater’s Mark Davis stopped three shots.

The Quakers return home Wednesday, facing Washington and Lee University, ranked 13th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III Top 25 Poll, for a 7 p.m. contest inside Appenzeller Field at Armfield Athletic Center.
