HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Elon University women’s soccer team fell to the Hofstra Pride, 3-1, on Friday evening, Oct. 7, at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. Erin Tanhauser finished a stunning strike in the 82nd minute for Elon’s lone score of the night.
The Phoenix falls to 7-6-1 overall and 2-2 in the CAA with the loss, while Hofstra improves to 7-6 overall and 1-4 in the league with victory.
“We did a lot of very good things tonight but unfortunately, and atypically, we allowed a couple of very soft goals,” said head coach Chris Neal. “You can’t do that in this league and expect to get a result. Credit to Hofstra’s Mulholland for a fantastic finish on their second goal, and to Erin Tanhauser, who scored our lone goal tonight. You have to tip your hat to goals of that quality. I am excited for our team to get back on the pitch Sunday and to right some of the wrongs of tonight.”
HIGHLIGHTS
Hofstra struck first in the fourth minute. Jill Mulholland’s initial shot went right through the hands of Phoenix goalkeeper Taylor Mohr and Kristin Desmond was there on the back post for the easy tap-in to give the Pride a 1-0 lead.
Despite Elon’s edge in possession during the first 45 minutes, Hofstra held a 1-0 lead at the break and had a 6-4 edge in the shot count.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Hofstra doubled its lead. Mulholland capitalized on a mishit clearance by an Elon defender for her ninth goal of the season. The Pride would then take a 3-0 lead in the 57th minute as Noriana Radwan slotted a pass from Mulholland past Mohr.
Tanhauser scored a stunning goal from 20-yards out that hit the crossbar and went in to put the Phoenix on the board in the 82nd minute. Kara DeGuisto played the initial ball to Tanhauser for the assist.
Hofstra would outshoot the Phoenix 18-11 in the victory. Elon won the corner battle 3-0 against the Pride. Mohr made three saves for the maroon and gold in goal.
