College Women’s Soccer – Guilford 1, Randolph 0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Lauren Culler (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) netted the game’s only goal in the middle of the second half to lead the Quakers to a Monday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Randolph College, 1-0.

The Quakers held the possession advantage for most of the first half, firing the period’s first two shots within the first ten minutes. The WildCats placed some offensive pressure on the Quakers late with an Alissa Gembach shot in the 37th minute, but Maggie Albert made the save to preserve the tied score heading into halftime.

Guilford immediately applied pressure to start the second half, drawing five corner kicks in the first eight minutes. Culler fired the only shot for a 15-minute stretch after the corner-kick rally as both sides traded possession. Culler finally broke through in the 71st minute, taking advantage of a Randolph turnover outside of their own box. Culler raced pasted the defender to the left and blasted a shot into the left corner of the goal to place the Quakers ahead.

The Quakers continued to threaten as the period grew late when Camille Franks set up centrally in the 81st minute, firing a shot that just sailed over the net. Two minutes later, the WildCats countered and threatened inside the box as Erin McClelland booted a shot that hit underneath the cross bar, just outside the goal line. McClelland regained possession and fired a second shot in the box, but Albert covered the ball to stop the Randolph attack and seal the victory.

The Quakers claimed a 14-7 advantage on shots while earning a decisive 8-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Maggie Albert (2-2) made five saves in net for the Quakers. Randolph’s Stephanie Quirk (1-5) also stopped five shots.

The Quakers (6-6, 3-4 ODAC) return to action Saturday, traveling to Eastern Mennonite University for a 4 p.m. ODAC contest.
