CARY, N.C. – Salvador Mijares and Neal Port defeated the 33rd-ranked doubles team in the nation and advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw, highlighting the Elon University men’s tennis team’s competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Carolina Regionals from Oct. 14-18.
“We had a great showing in doubles especially with Neal and Salvador making the quarterfinals and beating the 33rd team in the country,” Elon head coach Michael Leonard said. “I was incredibly pleased to watch Neal play at such a high level. Likewise, Felipe Osses-Konig had a great showing in singles.”
HIGHLIGHTS
Mijares and Port won three doubles matches in the event, beating pairings from Coastal Carolina and Campbell in the first two rounds before topping North Carolina’s 33rd-ranked duo of Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider 7-5, 7-5.
Mario Paccini and Felipe Sarrasague also had success in doubles, winning two matches and advancing to the third round. The duo notched a 7-5, 6-3 victory against Presbyterian’s Roberts/Kelley and added a straight-set win over Winthrop.
In singles action, Felipe Osses-Konig impressed for the Phoenix, winning a pair of matches in the main draw. The sophomore earned a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory against Furman’s Clarke Wilson and followed with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Jack Burkill of UNC Greensboro.
Paccini and Sarrasague also notched victories in the opening round of singles before falling in the second round. Sarrasague was the 14th-seeded singles player in the event.
Elon’s doubles pairings of Chris Humphreys and Petar Tomic, as well as Osses-Konig andTaylor Foote, added doubles wins in the consolation round.
