• High Point earned a 2-1 double-overtime win at Winthrop on Wednesday.
• Senior Chris Ramsell scored the game-winning goal in the 104th minute from the penalty spot.
• The Panthers have won three-straight games and are undefeated in the last four contests.

HIGH POINT, N.C. – A penalty kick goal by senior Chris Ramsell in the 104th minute delivered the High Point University men’s soccer team a 2-1 win over Winthrop in double-overtime on Wednesday night in Rock Hill, S.C.

High Point and Winthrop were knotted at 1-1 in the second overtime period when Winthrop was called for a foul in the box on a free kick by the Panthers. Ramsell stepped to the spot and hit a low shot to the right side for the goal and the win.

The Panthers move to 9-3-2 overall and 3-1-0 in the Big South with the road win while Winthrop drops to 3-9-1 overall and 0-5-0 in conference play.

“Anytime you can get three points on the road in conference play is a fantastic result,” head coach EJ O’Keeffe. “I thought we played well but unfortunately gave a goal up with 12 minutes to go. The boys didn’t give up; we pressed to find that second goal and were able to do that in overtime. Now we need to collect ourselves and get ready for a very difficult game against Radford Saturday.”

High Point and Winthrop remained knotted at 0-0 until the 71st minute when freshman Siggi Benonysson put HPU in front with his 10th goal of the season. Redshirt-senior Erien Campbell was played behind the defense and delivered a cross to the far post where Benonysson cut inside his defender for the tap in.

The Eagles answered with a goal to tie the contest at 1-1 seven minutes later as Rasmus Arousell headed in a cross at the far post off a pass from Jogvan Jacobsen.

Redshirt-freshman Keegan Meyer had two saves in the game to pick up his eighth win of the season, improving to 8-5-2 this season.

The Panthers outshot Winthrop, 15-8, and put six shots on goal compared to three from the Eagles.

High Point next hosts nationally-ranked Radford at Vert Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff against the Highlanders is set for 7 p.m.
