How it Happened
The Phoenix used a strong offensive start to move out to an early 8-4 advantage in the first set after a kill by Ebony Scott to force a Charleston timeout. Three kills by Karle helped extend the lead to as much as seven, 17-10, before the Cougars closed the gap to two, 18-16. Elon reached set point, 24-18, but CofC mounted an impressive comeback to score eight straight and take a 26-24 win.
After Charleston claimed a 13-7 edge to start the second set, the maroon and gold used kills by Terry and Pavlick, a block by Busa and Pavlick and a Terry ace to score four straight and pull within two, 13-11. Kills by Pavlick and Terry and an Erin Kelly ace evened the score at 14-all. The set saw four more ties before a solo block by Karle gave the Phoenix set point, 24-23. A Karle kill kept Elon in front, 25-24, before the Cougars claimed the final three points to win, 27-25.
Elon took a quick 6-3 lead in the third set with the help of an ace and kill by Agae. A kill by Busa kept the Phoenix in the lead, 12-10, before Charleston evened the set, 12-all. The maroon and gold was forced to call a timeout after the Cougars moved in front by two, 14-12. From there, CofC managed an 8-1 run to extend its lead, 23-13. Kills by Karle and Agae halted the Cougars for a time but it was not enough as Charleston took the set, 25-15, and the match.
Elon continues its road trip and plays its final regular-season road match at UNCW on Monday, Nov. 7, in Wilmington, N.C. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Hanover Hall.
