Eight Elon Phoenix Claim All-CAA Men’s Soccer Awards

RICHMOND, Va. – The Elon University men’s soccer team was well represented on the 2016 All Colonial Athletic Association men’s soccer teams as the league announced its postseason awards on Thursday evening, Nov. 10. Eight Phoenix players were honored with Elijah Agu headlining the group with his first team All-CAA selection.

Agu was the only Phoenix player on the All-CAA first team while sophomore Nick Adamczyk was Elon’s lone representative on the league’s second team. Jonathan Coleby and Jaiden Fortune receive All-CAA third team laurels while Phoenix freshmen Austin Hill, Luke Matthews and Tuki Tayali were tabbed to the league’s All-Rookie team. Goalkeeper Matthew Jegier rounded out the Phoenix honorees on the CAA’s All-Academic Team.

After coming into the season with only one career goal in his first two seasons, Agu broke out during his junior campaign. The Cary, N.C., native scored a team and CAA-best 11 goals, the most for the Phoenix since 2013, and had four multi-goal single-game performances including Elon’s first hat trick since 2005 with his three-score contest versus St. Bonaventure on Sept. 2. He also had four game-winners during the year and accounted for 23 total points.

Adamczyk also came on as a first-year starter during his sophomore season. The midfielder from Social Circle, Ga., led the Phoenix with five assists on the year and also scored his first career goal versus San Diego on Aug. 28. He ranked in the top five in the league in total assists and was sixth in assists per game at 0.29.

Coleby received his first career spot on the All-CAA teams with his third team selection. The junior defender was the only Elon player to play every minute during the season and helped anchor a Phoenix defense that ended the regular-season with a CAA-best eight shutouts, a CAA-low 15 goals allowed while also pacing the conference with a 0.83 goals against average.

Fortune also joined Coleby on the third team from his striker position. The Orlando, Fla., native finished second on the team in total points with nine on three goals and three assists. He had a pair of game-winners during the season including a goal in the Phoenix’s 2-0 win at Drexel on Oct. 15.

The freshmen trio of Hill, Matthews and Tayali gave Elon the highest number represented on the CAA All-Rookie Team in the league. Hill tied for second on the team with his three goals while Matthews also helped with his contributions along the backline as he played every minute in the 16 matches he appeared in while also scoring a goal and an assist. Tayali was fourth on the squad with six points on a pair of goals and a pair of assists from his striker position.

Jegier earned CAA All-Academic team accolades for the first time in his career. The Charlotte, N.C., native, led the CAA in shutouts per match (0.41), GAA (0.83), shutouts (seven) and was also third in save percentage at .750 while playing all but nine minutes in goal. He also received Academic All-District 3 first team accolades by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Oct. 27.
