College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 70, Greensboro 56

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) notched a double-double 21 points and 14 rebounds off the bench and fell just one steal short of a triple-double as the Quakers claimed a Tuesday evening victory over Greensboro College, 70-56, in the opener for both teams.

Weatherly shot nine-of-20 from the field and added four assists as ten of her rebounds came on the defensive glass. The senior led all players in scoring, rebounding, and steals for the contest.

The Pride held a 5-0 lead for four minutes in a first quarter where both offenses were slow to start the contest. The Quakers closed the quarter on a 7-4 run as the Pride’s Courtney Pearsall sunk a lay-up with eight seconds left to claim the first quarter lead. The Quakers opened the first 2:36 on a 6-0 run and amassed the run to 16-2 up until the 3:01 mark of the period. Two Heaven Walters (Yadkinville, N.C./Starmount) free throws to close the half gave the Quakers their largest lead of 16 points entering halftime.

Guilford extended their lead as large as 18 points to open the third quarter, but the Pride closed the lead to 11 points with 4:46 left in the period. The Quakers countered with a 12-2 run to extend their largest lead to 21 points with 1:31 left in the period. Guilford capped their largest lead at 22 points, a mark hit twice in the fourth quarter, with 5:27 left in the contest. The Pride shrunk the lead to as low as 12 points inside the final minute of the period, but the Quakers hung on to the advantage on the way to victory.

Lauren Ramsey (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) was the remaining Quakers’ player in double-figure scoring with 15 points, shooting six-of-nine from the field and netting one Guilford’s three three-point baskets. Essence Abraham (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley) added nine points off the bench with three steals on three-of-ten shooting.

Katie Lewis led all Pride scorers with 17 points off the bench, shooting seven-of-13 from the field. Rasheika Gregory added 14 points and seven rebounds on seven-of-13 shooting with two steals.

The Quakers shot 39.4 percent for the contest while the Pride shot 39.7 percent. The Quakers held the Pride to just 23.1 percent shooting in the first half with only six field goals. Guilford shot 11-of-20 (55 percent) from the foul line while the Pride shot 6-of-12 (50 percent).

Both sides finished even on the glass, 43-43, with the Quakers holding the offensive rebounding advantage, 18-14. Greensboro held the advantage on second-chance points, 14-10, while Guilford earned the edge in points off of turnovers, 24-19. The Quakers held a strong 46-32 edge in the paint.

Opening the season with eight of the first nine games at home, the Quakers return to action Saturday, hosting MacMurray College for 2 p.m. contest in the first day of the Guilford College Classic.
