Game Report on NWG-North Surry Boys Basketball:Stop Spicer, No-Dicer and North Surry has no answer for Reggie Davis, Tre Turner, Dr. Funderburg and the other Vikes

NORTHWEST GUILFORD 82 NORTH SURRY 70

GAME NOTES: What do Assumption College, Eastern New Mexico University, Loyola College of Maryland, and North Surry High School all have in common?? If you guessed these institutions of higher learning are all represented by a Greyhound mascot you are 100% correct. Yet one of these schools has separated themselves from the rest of the litter. With a perfect 7-0 record to start the basketball season, the team from Mt. Airy made its way down treacherous yet exotic terrain which gradually transitioned into the smooth and frigid asphalt of interstate 40. Much like a caged animal relishes the opportunity to run free, the squad of North Surry entered the Roger Nelson gymnasium about as eager as a Greyhound desires to chase the rabbit around a South Florida dog track. From the opening tap, both teams were seemingly as enthusiastic to play as Pavlov’s dog was to eat when the furry animal heard that bell.

Both teams were neck and neck at the end of the first quarter. With NW sporting a four point advantage, the Vikings were able to put a leash on the running Greyhounds. At halftime, NW had a 14 point advantage by a margin of 43-29. The lead was extended in the third quarter by as many as 22 points. With the Vikings ahead 66-44 to begin the final stanza, the Greyhounds mounted a comeback with two of their leading scores catching fire. Ultimately with team execution down the stretch, the Vikings managed to tame the Greyhounds with a final score of 82-70.

Senior PG Jalen Spicer did his best Russell Westbrook impersonation pouring in 21 points, 11 assists, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, and 6 deflections. Tre Turner contributed a strong double-double with 13 points & 11 rebounds to go along with 6 assists and 3 steals. Reggie Davis chipped in with 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Dave Funderburg delivered a yeoman’s effort with 10 points, 6 boards, and 2 assists. Matt Rakes posted a solid 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists while Jacob Davis finished with a timely 5 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

North Surry was led by Senior Carter Phillips with a game high 23 points. His partner in crime, Mason Hawks, chipped in with 15 points while Kendall Tucker added 14 for the Greyhounds.
